Charlie Burns is a Principal Analyst at Cabot Partners and covers emerging and evolving technologies including cloud computing, high performance computing, converged platforms, and IT product marketing and management. Charlie’s specialties include infrastructure cost evaluation, market analysis, and product management and marketing. He has over 40 years of experience in technical support, sales, marketing, product management, IT market research and consulting.
Charlie started his career at IBM in technical support of large clients and over 26 years he moved through various positions in sales, marketing, product planning for mainframes, and product management for fault tolerant and high availability offerings. Then Charlie moved on to the role of analyst covering data center issues in storage and large systems at Gartner in 1993 and to Giga Information Group in early 1998. He returned to Gartner in early 2000, to define and implement value-rich partner relationships with Gartner’s largest IT provider clients. This yielded significant new business with the marketing and product management teams of those IT providers.
In early 2006, Charlie joined Saugatuck technology as an analyst focusing on emerging technologies and became one of the earliest experts on the challenges and hidden costs of cloud computing. After Saugatuck was acquired by Information Services Group (an internationally known IT consulting company) in August 2015, Charlie continued his focus on infrastructure costs and IT provider assessments and identified the major challenges confronting traditional enterprise IT organizations.
During his time as an IT Analyst, Charlie has individually authored or contributed to hundreds of pieces of subscription research and client-specific reports providing deep insights into market directions, product capabilities, and provider strategies.
Mr. Burns has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from the Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, Ohio.
